Caminha 1809: Re-enacting the Napoleonic Invasions
At the weekend of February 14th & 15th Caminha relived the 2nd Napoleonic invasion of Portugal, and we presented the daily life of a Portuguese garrison with a military encampment - a very significant event for us! |
 |
|
The Group's first Napoleonic-era event went quite well! The military part was recreated with the presence of the 21st Infantry Regiment of Valença, and civilian life with various characters representing daily life of the period, in a series of activities organised by the Town Council.
There were demonstrations of various aspects of life in the Regiment, from camp-life to military tactics and firing a musket. |
|
|
|
- The Regiment on parade |
- Demonstration of combat tactics |
|
|
- Daily civilian life of the period |
- An English "spy" observing French movements |
Civilian life was recreated by four characters from various social strata, plus displays of objects from the period, such as domestic items, books, and cards, among other things.
There was also the opportunity to portray a British "spy," or "Exploring Officer" as they were known as, who was charged with reporting French troop movements to the Portuguese Regiment.
To sum up our first public activity after months of preparation, although there are some details to improve, the event went well and was well received by both the public and the organisers!

In addition to historical re-enacting activities, the Ordem organises tours of monuments and other places of historical interest for its members. Such a trip took place on March 29th, when almost a dozen members visited the region of the "Three Castles" - Palmela, Sesimbra and Setúbal, where they could learn more about these important sites. We will certainly do more of this! |
APRIL

April Workshop: Recreating the Age of Rome
Our monthly social event and training Workshop in re-enacting skills took place at the weekend of April 3rd and 4th, when a dozen and a half re-enactors participated in various activities, particularly involving the Roman Encampment. |
| |
|
An encampment was set up in the small Roman fort (which had been constructed three months earlier by the Roman legionnaires), following the daily practice of these soldiers in the hey-day of the Roman Empire.
In addition, a number of other activities took place following various themes, as well as socialising of course, with great conviviality among the participants. Now it only remains for us to re-enact "outside the gates" - in public! |

The second edition of the Heritage Fair took place from the 30th of April to the 3rd of May in the city's Exhibition Pavilion, where we were present re-enacting the Middle Ages and the Napoleonic invasions. |
| |
It was with great pleasure that we were present at this event in a city with such great cultural heritage.
During the three days of the exhibition, we put on three demonstrations of the Napoleonic invasions, portraying troops of the Anglo-Portuguese army, as well as a medieval demonstration from the 12th century. |
|
|
|
Public interest was very high during all these events, and visitors were enthusiastic about this way of highlighting the potential of history in promoting both culture and tourism.

Vila Real de Santo António : "Fair of the Enlightenment" re-enacts the origins of the town
The 4th Fair of the Enlightenment of Vila Real de Santo António took place from the 13th to the 16th of May, and witnessed heavy participation both from the local community and the re-enactors and other participants who joined the festivities. |
| |
|
With this event, Vila Real de Santo António recalled its foundation in 1774 by the Marquis of Pombal: Portuguese army engineers constructed the city from scratch in two years! The Parade of History took place on May 13th, re-creating the city's history from its founding to the Revolution of April 25th, 1974. Hundreds of participants portrayed the 200 years that spanned those two dates!

A Day in a Medieval Port: Schools in Albufeira recreate the 13th century
From May 27th to the 30th, the town relived the times of a medieval seaport, during the second half of the 13th century in the kingdom of Portugal and the Algarves. The event was very successfully organised by the town council, and involved the entire scholastic community of the town. |
 |
|
Over these four days, about three thousand pre-secondary school children from the town of Albufeira had an opportunity to recreate historical tasks, professions and moments of daily social life from the second half of the 13th century |

For the second consecutive year, from June 5th to the 8th, the town of Torrão decorated itself authentically to portray the times of Bernadim Ribeiro in the 16th century. In spite of bad weather, the event was very well received. |
| |
This event was organised by the city council of Alcácer do Sal and the town council of Torrão, with considerable cooperation from schools and other local associations. Hundreds of townspeople of all ages dressed up in order to portray the daily life of Torrão in the 16th century. |

Medieval Montemor-o-Velho: 7th Edition returns to the 13th Century
This year on June 21st, and before large audience, Medieval Montemor-o-Velho witnessed the Assault on the Castle and a grand Horse Tournament, recreating the dynastic struggles of the beginnings of the 13th Century. |
| |
In spite of the mixed praise of the (unfortunately still) rather unknown King Pedro I, he was a man of great talent and an advanced thinker of the 1300's, and thus we chose him and the civil wars of the beginning of the 13th century as the context for this year's activities.
The event began with the assault on the castle. However, after sharp fighting, an agreement was reached that the conflict would be resolved in a mounted tournament between champions from the two sides.
At the end of the Tournament there was a feast celebrating the resolution of the conflict and the return of peace.

Aljubarrota 1385 - 2009 : Celebration and Recreation "Hand in Hand!"
Commemorating, understanding, and even feeling the Royal Battle of Aljubarrota of August 14th, 1385, are the bases of this annual activity of the Ordem. This year, from August 14th through the 16th, our celebration took place on the Military Field of St. George and in the town of Aljubarrota , witnessing great and enthusiastic participation by our members, who more than ever want to continue this event into the future. |
| |
|
At the beginning of the 21st century, whoever might go to the Military Field of St. George on the 14th of August would be greeted by the sight of dozens of people carefully dressed as medieval Portuguese (and Castilians) were on the 14th of August, 1485 - it's the Ordem da Cavalaria do Sagrado Portugal paying homage to those who fought and fell in the Royal Battle of Aljubarrota!
We began early in St. George, next to the chapel, and then went to the town of Aljubarrota to re-enact the period and enliven their Medieval Fair in honor of the battle which bears its name. |

The Regiment of the Royal Fleet- the Marines: The Bocagian Literary Gathering in Setúbal
During the celebrations of the traditional Bocagian Literary Gathering, organised by the Setubalin Journal and the town council, we recreated the 1700's Regiment of the Royal Fleet (or Marines) during our period displays in the Belvedere of St. Sebastian on September 14th. |
| |
There was considerable innovation in the literary gathering this year, with numerous cultural activities taking place outdoors in various places in the community where the late-18th century poet Manuel Maria Barbosa du Bocage was born.
Live music and dance as well as poetry were featured, along with a demonstration of arms and period fencing. The presence of the esteemed Bocage "himself" was felt, with his keen satiric verses about the present (2009) state of the city of Setubal. At the end, one could savour an agreeable supper in front of St. Sebastian's Church. |

A Ordem da Cavalaria do Sagrado Portugal , in addition to re-enacting history, is in fact part of history, and proves time and again that it is an organisation which (truly) recreates history at both the national and international level, and welcomes dozens of people from all walks of life who love re-enacting.
Of the thousands which exist, one can count on one hand the small number of historical re-enactment groups which attain the level of the Órdem in any aspect, from social, to cultural,, to innovation and certainly to inclusiveness in the sense of people and new ideas. |
